The $2,200 price isn’t totally out of line for such a capable camera, but it puts in the ballpark of full-frame models like the excellent Canon EOS R6 ($2,499), and well above the $1,700 Fujifilm X-T4, our current Editors’ Choice winner for less-than-full-frame mirrorless cameras. With other rivals like the Fujifilm X-H2 likely to launch in September, it looks like that price point will be the main battleground for mirrorless cameras this year.
It’s good for telephoto shots too-I recorded a few clips with the 300mm F4 handheld, a lens that I’d have to lock down on a tripod with many other systems. Air France has made tweaks to the Premium Economy product over the years, but the changes have been slight, and the product isn’t particularly competitive with the comfort and service introduced by US-based carriers with their premium economy cabins (many of which are significantly newer). That said, the Canon EOS R7 and cheaper EOS R10 are also shaping up to be fine new options in this space. The OM-1 still has its flaws, like its average subject-tracking autofocus, but if the rumored OM-5 can inherit its many good sides, then it could be a fine new choice for travel or wildlife shooters. A warm tribute to the original 50-year-old Olympus OM-1 35mm SLR, and a fitting swansong for the Olympus name, the OM-1 is a hugely capable camera, and a joy to shoot with. Photographers with a big stash of Micro Four Thirds lenses had some heart-skipping moments when Olympus spun off its camera division. It’s also an excellent option (and system) if you care most about portability. Right now, we don’t have any rumored OM System OM-5 specs to go on, but we can make a few educated guesses about what we might be able to expect from it, come September. The largest hurdle to using a recorder is the tiny micro HDMI port-these connections aren’t as sturdy as full-size HDMI ports and have earned a bad reputation for reliability, as they’re prone to damage from mishandled cables. That’s because it’s a new line from OM Digital Solutions, which bought the sinking Olympus imaging division in 2021. A natural successor to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III, the OM-1 will be the last camera to have the Olympus name etched on its body. This may be the last camera to be adorned with the Olympus name, but the OM-1 points towards a bright future for the OM line under its new owners. It seems likely that the camera will inherit the OM-1’s new 20MP Micro Four Thirds stacked sensor, which we found delivered much-improved AF performance compared to earlier Olympus cameras.
Everything that we’ve loved about the Olympus Micro Four Thirds system over the years is cranked up a notch here, with tangible improvements in virtually every department, especially handling, power, AF speed (and accuracy) and computational modes. Of course, if you’re buying a Micro Four Thirds for video, the fresh Panasonic Lumix GH6 is more compelling than the OM-1. More high-end cameras are pushing 4K120 slow motion-we’ve seen it in stacked full-frame entries like the Canon EOS R3 and Sony a1. Camera budget a little more tight?
